Jim HODGES: Love Et Cetera

Written by Rooksana Hossenally

The Centre Pompidou is the first major European institution to put on a solo show of work by American contemporary artist, Jim Hodges. Sixty of his major works are exhibited, which illustrate the recurring themes of his thirty-year career, such as fragility, temporality, love and death. The exhibition sketches out an overview of the artist’s work since the beginning of his career which began in 1980. Although drawing is omnipresent in his radical and original works, his use of uncommon materials can be as extravagant as 24 carat gold leaf, to artificial flowers, his own saliva and adhesive tape. Evoking nature, literature and spirituality, his works are a fusion of simple materials with fastidious techniques of drawing, sewing, collage, decoupage and assemblage.

Jerome Soimaud: Breaking Tradition for Miami’s B Side

Jerome Soimaud: Breaking Tradition for Miami’s B Side by Elisa Turner

“At first I didn’t like the city at all,” confesses Jerome Soimaud, smiling a bit in his faintly French-accented English. “But now I am hooked to Miami. Because Miami can surprise you. You can live in Miami for ten, twenty years and still be surprised by Miami.” As he speaks, Miami streets bask in the thin winter sunlight of February. It is sweater weather in the subtropics. The morning air possesses a crystal-clear clarity: gone is the distorting, humid haze of the city’s extended summer and fall. The crystalline clarity in the air outside Yeelen Art Gallery, exhibiting Soimaud’s works of charcoal and pencil on canvas in the series “Miami B Side,” matches the exquisitely textured clarity illuminating these elegant vignettes of less-than-glamorous streets in downtown Miami, a city famously known for its fashion, fluff, and flesh. Soimaud captures the flip side of Miami, the B side that’s old news to inner city residents, but not even breaking news to the jet-setting art world descending on Wynwood art district during Art Basel Miami Beach come December.

In Accordance With Necessity at Gallery Five Thirty Three
Review by Thomas A. McDermott

It could be rightfully argued that art is never more real than when the material component of the piece is yourself: the body. Performance art has been around for a while, but on April 11th, 2009, omething felt completely original about the performances at In Accordance With Necessity, a how hosted at Gallery Five Thirty Three in Los Angeles. Perhaps performance art has held onto its mystique more than other art forms have. When you ask an artist what kind of art they make and they respond with “performance art,” the answer often seems to bewilder people into thinking hat the artist is a dancer, singer, or, perhaps an actor; it’s still not a familiar form. To see a group f artists that have clearly invested time into the practice of performance art coming together was  refreshing change. Performance is often coupled with other art events or receptions to shows
featuring installations or sculptural works; here performance art was the only thing people came to see.

What are the main goals you’re trying to achieve? What are your drives?

This may seem strange but there are no real goals I am trying to achieve. I feel very content. Advertising has made a good living for me. In a lot of ways that has given me freedom in my personal artwork. I can afford all the great art supplies I desire. I have the newest computers, scanners and printers at my disposal. I have done a lot of creative print campaigns and television commercials. I've gotten to work with the best photographers and directors in the world. So I guess you can say as far as advertising goes. I have achieved my dream. I never dreamed I would accomplish so much. In my free time I paint and draw all the time. Every second I can find is spent doing art. I travel the world and sketch in my moleskine notebooks. Using a small folding camping stool, I walk the streets with my black pens and watercolor set searching for just the right things to draw. I have a very big following on my blog. I can publish all my work there. There is no client to try and please, only what I want to do. There is no plan I am trying to follow. I am not interested in selling in galleries. I do all of the work just because I love doing it. then I like sharing it with people on my blog.

Art Daegu - 2009

An Exposition Review

Marilyn Campiz

Often, when we think of the world of art, we are often limited to the west. Rarely does an artist from the east make that jump to have a global impact as Picasso or van Gogh still have. Often for the artists, language is an incredible barrier, however I found myself in South Korea at the International Art Fair in Daegu with a feast of surprises.
